SINOPSIS
Español
Un grupo de indígenas del poblado de Yohualichan trata de participar en las festividades dedicadas a Sa Miguel Arcángel. Conmemoran su festividad frente a la iglesia católica del pueblo en compañía de todos los habitantes y la conmemoran con sus rituales y bailes, cantando en su lengua materna: náhuatl. Todo va bien hasta que surge un malententendio y el intolerante cura local prohíbe la presentación ya que considera que es una blasfemia. Los indígenas se rehúsan a aceptar esta decisión y se acuartelan dentro de la iglesia. Y empieza el conflicto preparado por el talentoso director Miguel Sabido, que aprovecha la situación para mostrar la vida cotidiana de este pueblo indigena mexicano. Hay siete millones de indígenas en el país que hablan sus propias lenguas y mantenien su cultura a pesar del exterminio de los criollos.

A group of Indians from the settlement of Yohualichan attempts to take part in the festivities dedicated to Saint Michel. Before the local Catholic church, and accompanied by all of the population, they commemorate with their rituals and dances, singing in their original language Náhuati.All goes well until there is a misunderstanding and the intolerant local priest bans the presentation that he regards as an act of blasphemy. The Indians refuse to accept the decision and take refuge in the church. The scene is set for conflict.Director Miguel Sabido uses this situation to show the day-to-day life of Mexican Indians. There are seven million of them in the country who still speak their original languages and uphold a culture of white extermination.

dedicados a São Miguel. Em frente à igreja católica local,
e acompanhados por toda a população, festejam com seus rituais
e danças, cantando em sua língua original, o Náhuatl. Tudo
corre bem, até que acontece um desentendimento e o intolerante sacerdote
local proíbe a representação, por considerá-la um
ato de blasfêmia. Os índios se negam a aceitar a decisão
e se refugiam na igreja. Está armado o conflito.O diretor Miguel Sabido
aproveita essa situação para mostrar o cotidiano dos índios
mexicanos. São sete milhões no país, que continuam falando
suas línguas originais e defendendo suas culturas do extermínio
branco.

For those of you who speak more Espanol than I do, you'll recognize that Santo
Luzbel translates to "Saint Lucifer." The story is that a group of
Mexican Indians have been given the responsibility of taking over a ceremony
about Saint Lucifer (yes, that Lucifer), and the established Church isn't too
keen on it. At times this teeters perilously close to a "let's put on a
show!" afterschool special movie; what draws it back is the fascinating
insights into a culture that is probably as obscure for most American viewers
as it was for me and the wonderful acting, particularly by one fellow whose
name I don't know (wish I had saved my program notes) who radiates the energy
of Toshiro Mifune circa Yojimbo and Rashomon. END
